FR5 Software

FirstRate5® house energy rating software

FirstRate5® is an easy-to-use interactive tool with a graphic user interface that enables designers and thermal performance assessors to generate energy ratings for a home by tracing over floor plans. The software integrates the AccuRate calculation engine to estimate the annual heating and cooling energy and can be used to rate an existing design or as an interactive tool to optimise the design beyond compliance.

FirstRate5 v5.2.4a (3.13) is now available as a free download from www.fr5.com.au.

This version is a minor bug fix release. SV recommends that all users upgrade to this version.

This bug fix version addresses an issue some users were experiencing with custom windows when upgrading project files completed in previous versions of the software to FirstRate5 v5.2.4 (3.13). FirstRate5 v5.2.4 (3.13) was not recognising some custom windows and assessors were required to manually respecify these windows.

The issue was caused by minor changes made to a range of window manufacturer names in the AFRC Custom Windows library supplied to Sustainability Victoria.

FirstRate5 v5.2.4a (3.13) contains a change that fixes this issue and any future changes to window manufacturer names will not impact FirstRate5 project files.

It is important for users to note that if FirstRate5 v5.2.4a (3.13) displays a ‘Missing window types’ error message when opening a project file, this is NOT a software bug but rather due to one of the following two reasons.

  1. The custom window has been deleted from the AFRC Custom Windows library.
  2. The custom window code has been changed slightly by the AFRC. Sustainability Victoria has noticed that a small number of custom window codes in the AFRC Custom Windows library contain typographical errors (e.g. a double space instead of a single space) and if the AFRC fixes these codes, they will no longer be automatically recognised by FirstRate5 and the windows will need to be manually respecified.

Current versions of FirstRate5 & transition arrangements for FR5 v5.2.3 (3.13)

Until 9 December 2016 (5pm) a transition period will be in place. During this period both v5.2.3 (3.13) and v5.2.4 (3.13) files will automatically calculate on the FirstRate5 website. Please note the following:
  • All project files created using a version of FirstRate5 v5.2.3 (3.13)  (i.e. v5.2.3, v5.2.3a or 5.2.3b) will be calculated using the v5.2.3b calculation engine when uploaded to the FirstRate5 website
  • All project files created using a version of FirstRate5 v5.2.4 (3.13)  (i.e. v5.2.4 or v5.2.4a) will be calculated using the v5.2.4a calculation engine when uploaded to the FirstRate5 website

After 9 December 2016 (5pm) v5.2.4 (3.13) files will continue to automatically calculate on the FirstRate5 website, however v5.2.3 (3.13) files will calculate by special request only.

Note: It is the user’s responsibility to ensure certificates are produced with the appropriate version. If a user chooses to inappropriately use an earlier version of FR5 to produce a certificate, they run the risk that a Building Surveyor will reject the certificate leading to further certificate costs.

Note: Installation of minor releases involving a letter change (e.g. v5.2.4 to v5.2.4a) will by default overwrite the previous version, while major releases involving a number change (e.g. v5.2.2 to v5.2.3) will by default install beside older versions.
